Jen and Kyle’s celebration was our last in the wedding rush of fall foliage and trips to Western Mass. We arrived back to the Montague Retreat Center after being there the weekend before to see that the trees had come fully alive, with oranges, yellows, and reds bursting from the quiet mountainside.
Upon entering the day, we were greeted with a sense of calm, grounding and comfort, as friends sorted through baby photos, Jen and Kyle got ready together wearing adorable matching flannel shirts, and their two little pugs ran around with no shortage of chin scratches. The energy of the day was abuzz with the news that Jen and Kyle would be accompanied by an extra heartbeat as they celebrated their day. Family and friends were already smitten with the new baby on the way and what he would mean to them and their community.
Community is one of the best things we get to experience with our couples. For a day, we are amongst their chosen people, seeing and feeling the love that holds them. Jen and Kyle’s wedding was a truly communal event that celebrated their friends and family and allowed people to be themselves. Everyone got dressed and ready together, gender norms and separations be damned, as no one wore pants anyway. During their ceremony of Scottish singing and bag pipes, a friend came up to speak of Jen and Kyle’s generous hearts and the way that they lived each day as true allies. Their joining as a couple was a privilege that they did not take for granted. Their union was carefully honored, both as the root of a new nuclear family, and the deepening of the bonds of their current extended family of friends.
